We believe our 6 year old dachshund had a seizure on Sunday. We took him to the doctor and the vet said his blood work was normal and that it would take some time for him to go ack to normal. Today he is still not acting normal. he seems to just be dazing, he doesn’t bark at all and doesn’t get up to greet us.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is the dachshund's name?

Max

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Max?

He had an episode a month ago where we believed it was a seizure as well but he was back to normal within a day.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Max, please?

The post-ictal (post-seizure) period usually is less than an hour in dogs suffering from idiopathic (unknown cause) epilepsy but may be protracted if a previous seizure caused further brain damage or an on-going process such as one of the encephalomyelitides exists in Max. Because Max's mentation (mental status) remains altered, a thorough neurologic exam is needed and that's best performed by a specialist veterinary neurologist (www.acvim.org). I would expect a cerebrospinal fluid tap and analysis as well as MRI being recommended on such a patient.
