Older Schnauzer has diarrhea. Stool is semi-translucent with yellowish coloring. Is there a home remedy. He is an older dog. Thanks

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name and age?

Pepper is 14 years old.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Pepper?

This is the first episode of this nature. He still eats and is active.

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Pepper has a history of recent diarrhea. I am sorry to hear about what is happening. There are a few different possible causes for this, which may benefit you to have her tested by a veterinarian, but I can discuss some home remedies as well. For instance, parasites can cause diarrhea, so a routine fecal exam would be helpful. Some home remedies to help support the intestines would include things like probiotics, KaoPectate, and adding fiber to the diet. Fiber options consist of things like canned pumpkin or Metamucil. You may also change the food to a low fat option such as boiled chicken, white rice, or sweet potatoes. Feed in small amounts throughout the day and do this for 3-5 days. You should hopefully see an improvement in uncomplicated cases within about 5-7 days.
