Customer Question
My dog is 80lbs...

My dog is 80lbs and I he got into acepromazine 7 hours ago and there were 4, 25 mg tablets. He was pretty awake all afternoon until about an hour ago he got really sleepy. He is a Siberian Husky, so this is very uncommon. I am wondering if I should take him to a animal ER.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help 80lbs. How old is 80lbs?

He is 3&1/2

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about 80lbs?

No, that won't be needed. He received a bit more than the recommended dose on the label and so will remain safe. That dose is considered excessive by most of us but although it will cause excessive sleepiness it isn't dangerous. Be patient with him and he'll sleep it off within 12 hours but may remain groggy for up to 36 hours. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Is there anything that I should watch for, for there to be a need for me to take him to the ER?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

You can check his vitals. He should be taking more than 6-8 breaths per minute while asleep and his gum and tongue color should remain nicely pink - not bluish/greyish which would indicate cyanosis - a lack of oxygen to his tissues. I believe that it would very unlikely that he would need ER attention. Please continue on in our conversation if you wish.
