He cannot breath well and is coughing up something

Customer Question
He cannot breath well...

He cannot breath well and is coughing up something yellowish

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Cats have coughing problems all the time but it is worrying. The Expert will know what you should do. What is the cat's name and age?

Niki 12years

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Niki?

12years

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Niki?

He has been to two vets. One said he had an infection from a broken tooth but it got worse so we took him to another vet yesterday that said he had upper repertory infection and put him on antibiotics. He is even worse this morning.

Good morning.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here.

I would be happy to help you!

Have either of the veterinarians taken chest x-rays?

This is a twelve year old cat that is having trouble breathing!

We need to look at the lung and the heart

Paul

they took a lot of x-rays and said his lungs looked clear and his heart is healthily
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Okay

Shall we try some treatment for upper respiratory infection then?

Paul

They gave me antibiotics that I am giving him but he just keeps getting worse
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

The antibiotics wont help unless it is bacterial

These are viral infections

You can try humidifying his airways- put him in bathroom and turn shower on hot for ten minutes

Repeat three times a day

Buy L-lysine and give 250 mg twice daily with food

Talk to your vet about anti-viral medications- will need prescription

What antibiotic dis they give you?

Use neo-synephrine- one drop into alternating nostrils every 12 hours

Paul

They prescribed orbax drops
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Okay.

WE need to change that antibiotic to Azithromycin- it is anti-viral also

Make sense?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Is the one they prescribed an anti-viral?
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

No

It is an antibiotic- A quinolone called Orbafloxacin

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
it is for a bacterial infection?
He won't eat or drink and has gotten pretty weak in just 4 days.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Yes .

And I am very concerned about the not eating and drinking

Older cats can be really impacted by these infections

I would like you to buy some no salt chicken broth to encourage him to drink

Feed warmed up canned baby food- meat based only- to encourage him to eat

Did you mention the not eating to the vets you went to? If you did and they did not act aggressively to help then you need to find a new vet

Okay?

I took him to an animal hospital; they are going to keep him overnight. They are going to hydrate him, use a nebulizer three times, increase antibiotics (I told them what you suggested), and a couple other things.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Good job!

Please keep me updated

My baby Niki is no longer with us. He did not make it; we lost him at 9:15 this morning in the hospital. They were doing some kind of operation checking his air passages because he was only breathing through his mouth. My heart is bleeding.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

I am so sorry to hear this!

Please accept my deepest sympathies
