Customer Question
My border collie has lost...
My border collie has lost too much weight and eats the same as he did before the weight loss. I can feel bones all over him he's so skinny. I had been away from home for months and my mother has been taking care of him so I feel it happened gradually. He still plays like he always has but he's 12 years old. Please help I'm very worried!

I am sorry to hear Rex has lost so much weight. That is very concerning, especially in an older dog.

Is he drinking normally, or more than normal? Any vomiting or diarrhea?

One thing to check for is diabetes; dogs with diabetes eat well but lose weight. They also drink more water than usual.

Hyperthyroidism is a rare condition seen in older dogs that are losing weight but still eating well.

I would start with an exam and blood tests with your veterinarian to try to find the cause. Something is wrong if he is this thin. You need to get a diagnosis, so you know how to treat him.

He is still eating and drinking the same.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

That is good. If he is not drinking excessively, he is probably not diabetic. Still, if he were mine, I would want to know his thyroid level, blood calcium level, liver and kidney values, and electrolytes (sodium, potassium).

My first thought was we should check his poo to make sure it's not a tape worm
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
mam I'm just praying he's treatable. I'm definitely going to take him in asap.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Tape worms do not make dogs lose weight like this. I would have him checked by your veterinarian.
