Customer Question

He is acting very dumpy, won't really eat and drinking very little. Last night threw up twice and was outside earlier eating grass
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?
Customer: Not that I know of - he did have a little chicken after thanksgiving but not fat or skin
JA: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name and age?
Customer: Bear and he is 10 years old and weighs 15 pounds
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Bear?
Customer: He is overweight

Hi.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here.

Happy Thanksgiving!

When is the last time that he vomited? Any diarrhea?

Paul

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No diarrhea. Last vomit this morning around 5 am. He did have more bowel movements than normal yesterday.

Thanks

This is either acute gastritis or pancreatitis

Of course it could be other things too like metabolic disease- kidney, liver, electrolytes- or organ enlargement etc etc

But playing the odds it is likely either of the first two.

Still bright and alert? Drinking water?

Paul

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
for the most part still alert. Eyes are watery and he is holding his tail down which is not him. Sleeping lots
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Drinking some water, but not lots.

Alright here is the plan:

No food till tomorrow

Water is okay. Can also offer pedialyte or gatorade

Buy some Zantac and give 1.0 mg/kg three times a day by mouth- Antacid and pro-motility drug.

Monitor for continued vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, blood in vomit, abdominal discomfort

IF no vomiting then start with cooked hamburger and rice tomorrow AM

IF vomiting persists then he needs to be examined and his blood/urine tested and possible xrays/ultrasound of the abdomen performed

Make sense?

Paul
