Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name and age?

She's a st shes a shi tzu bichon mix about 10-12lbs maybe

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

Hello, I'm Dr. Kara. I have over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian and I'd like to help. Please give me a moment to review your concerns.

I understand that you believe that your pup may have eaten a Percocet.

This drug is a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone.

There are different sizes of this medication. Most contain 325mgs of acetaminophen. Is that the case with your Percocet?

But the oxycodone size varies. Is this the 5mg, 7.5mg or 10mg size?

This was a white pill A349 on it...

5mg

With acetaminophen we see toxicity symptoms in dogs at a dose of acetaminophen higher then 75 mg per kilogram (2.2 pounds per kilogram) of body weight.

At 11 pounds she is 5 kilograms, so she would need to eat 375mgs of acetaminophen. (5kg X 75mg/kg = 375mg).

If your tablet contained 325mgs of acetaminophen then that is not enough to be toxic.

Oxycodone could be used for pain relief in dogs but due to high abuse potential and addiction issues it is not usually prescribed.

Oxycodone in dogs is dosed at 0.3 mg/kg orally every 8-12 hours as needed. That would be 1.5mgs every 8-12 hours.

So if she did eat this pill that contained 5mgs of oxycodone she took about three times the usual dose.

Ok so it's 4-5hrs after and hasn't had any symptoms what's your thoughts?

Signs to watch for with acetaminophen toxicity would be brown or gray colored gums, difficulty breathing, edema or swelling of the face, neck, legs or feet, vomiting, yellow color to the skin and in very severe cases coma.

I would encourage her to drink plenty of water tonight and watch her closely but at the dose of acetaminophen she ate she should not have any toxic effects.

Side effects of an overdose of oxycodone include severe lethargy, inability to be roused from sleep, slow rate of respiration, slow heart rate and possible coma.

I would have expected your pup to show at least some signs of sleepiness/lethargy this many hours after ingestion.

I would continue to keep a close eye on her overnight. But given how normal she is I suspect that she either didn't eat the pill, or didn't eat the entire pill.
