Customer Question
I just adopted a 2...
I just adopted a 2 year old female german shepherd. Her pee is red, looks like blood. Occasionally it looks clear/yellow, but mostly it looks red. Her previous owner said it has always been like that (she had her over a year). I've had her 4 days now, and she has only pooped 3 times. She didn't poop at all yesterday. She wakes up once a night to go pee, but at different times each night. The first night it was at 1:30, next night it was at 4:30, last night it was at 3:30. I take her out to pee before I put her in her crate around 9 or 10 pm. I think she mostly slept outside and was left outside with the previous owner, who got her from a GSD rescue group, who rescued her when she was still a puppy, under a year old. She is the smallest GSD I have ever had (she's my fifth), only about 60 pounds. Do some GSD's pee red normally? Could her inability to poop after she eats be just because she's in a new place? We keep her inside with us most of the time, and take her for 4 walks a day, and give her lots of play exercise in the backyard during the day, so I always know when she goes potty. She did not poop at all yesterday. And she NEVER pees or poops on walks, even walks lasting over an hour. I'm wondering if this is normal or not. Thank you

It's very likely that the stress of changing homes is giving her the desire to hold her stool longer than normal. With time, this should become more frequent and regular toward a normal schedule. Red urine is not normal, regardless of the breed. This needs to be worked up. I would recommend that you start with a vet visit, urinalysis, bloodwork and potentially x-rays, as well, to rule out bladder stones. If you need help finding a vet in your area, please let me know. I'll need your city and state.
