Customer Question
I have a 2...

I have a 2 day old shorkie. Vet said today that with her domed shaped head, she looked like she could possibly have hydrocephalus. We are going to try prednisone. But I was checking to see if there was anything else I could do at home to decrease the fluid on brain? I also live in a smaller town, so we do not have any specialist here. Any information about the dx, what I can do at home, and who to see for this would be great. We do not breed dogs. This was a total accident with our female yorkie and Shi-tzu

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name?

Since she is only 2 days old, we were taking our time finding a name. Wanted to see what type of personality she had in a week or 2.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

I don't think so

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. To answer you directly, hydrocephalus describes an increase in volume of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricular system of the brain which cases signs of encephalopathy - changes in mentation: dullness, disorientation, stupor as well as behavioral abnormalities, inability to learn, compulsive activities, aggression; seizures. The diagnosis is suspected based on the physical examination and signalment. A domed-shaped head and persistent fontanelle are possible. Eye postion typically will manifest ventral or ventrolateral strabismus. A neurologic examination may reveal the signs of encephalopathy as mentioned above plus gait abnormalities (dysmetria, ataxia, circling, aimless wandering; central blindness, vestibular dysfunction. Treatment medically offers temporary palliation of clinical signs. Surgical management using shunting procedures may offer a more permanent remedy. A specialist veterinary neurologist (www.acvim.org) will be needed to evaluate the pup and suggest treatment. There are no home remedies for these pups. Medical treatment might involve prednisone, a diuretic such as furosemide, drugs that reduce cerebrospinal fluid production such as acetazolamide and omeprazole, and antiepileptic drug therapy for seizure control. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
