Customer Question
We believe he ate...

We believe he ate something but don’t know what. 2 x’s before he has eaten socks and either thrown them up or passed them within 48 hours. However this time he is in a lot of pain and is just laying which is out of the norm. He is 18 month old golden doodle - typically very active and energetic.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the Golden?

He is still peeing and my husband said he had a lot of diarrhea today and threw up several times.

Additional info: normally we feed him twice a day- he ate this morning but as noted earlier threw up and had diarrhea throughout the day. He will not eat his dinner this evening. Also - we have a lab that is on allergy medicine which we deliver in a small piece of cheese. The golden doodle also gets a small piece of cheese at the same time. He will not eat his little piece of cheese this evening.

Presented with a young dog with a history of ingesting foreign bodies such as socks that is not lethargic, seemingly painful, inappetant, vomiting, and diarrhea... I would first and foremost suggest assessing abdominal x-rays to look for a foreign body or evidence of an obstructive pattern in his intestines. Not all foreign bodies are readily available in x-rays, so sometimes we have to look for patterns that an obstruction is occurring.

A physical examination with careful palpation of his abdomen my increase or decrease the level of concern for this.

Other things that might be considered would include a routine blood count, serum chemisty panel, and urinalysis to assess internal organ function beyond what may be seen on a physical examination. Most clinics can assess these things in-house for more urgent presentations.

A fecal parasite check would also be wise.

It sounds like you've been lucky in the past. If he's developed an intestinal obstruction he may require surgery to relieve the issue. These can be quite serious and life-threatening, and tend to be worse when let go for too long. Given that history, I'd suggest getting him in as soon as you can and be sure to discuss your concern with the veterinarian, including his history of ingesting things like socks. If you can get him in tonight that would be best. If not, contact your local vet first thing in the morning. Withold food until he can be assessed in person. Water in small amounts is ok to allow.
