My dog was prescribed Doxycycline and can it cause the nose…

Customer Question
My dog was prescribed...

My dog was prescribed Doxycycline and can it cause the nose to bleed?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name and age?

It's a Golden Retriever and she is 5 years old, 57lbs.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Daisy

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Daisy?

She was brought to the Vet clinic last Sunday because she was not eating very much but drinking a lot of water. Her doc took a blood test, stool check and results were normal, though she had a fever no meds were prescribed. Still wasn't doing very well during the week, so I brought her in yesterday and discovered she had 105 fever. Had an xray done due to breathing. Looked ok, xray sent out to lab. Then, was prescribed Doxycycline due to her fever and past months of a few ticks were found on her but not consistently.

Hi.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here

They are thinking that she has Lyme disease or another tick borne riskettsial.

The Doxycycline will not cause nose bleeds.

Is she sneezing a lot?

How much blood in the nasal discharge?

Paul

No, she is not sneezing at all. Tonight, I gave Daisy her dose of Doxycycline and after she got up from her sleep a little while ago I notice a small and very light spot of blood on the sheet. I blot a tissue and discovered it was coming from her nose but not consistently. This happened once in this morning. Also, she is breathing slightly fast while lying down.

Thanks.

She had not done this before and she is a young dog.

I am not going to get too panicked just yet. This may be a one time thing.

I am thinking perhaps low platelet count (discs in blood that cause clotting) as opposed to a bad disease in the nose- infection, mass, tooth root abscess) OR a one off due to dry air.

I would put her in the bathroom and run shower for ten minutes on hot to humidify her nasal passages.

Make sense?

Paul
