8 yr old male Doberman...
8 yr old male Doberman intact never mated. Sparse eating while I'm away during day. Drinking water bowl dry. 2 months since hurricane Irma. When breathing he sounds congested. Took to vet yesterday. X-ray of lungs and 2 meds. Doxycycline and prednisolone. Take with food. He ate and drank. Gave him the 3 pills. Shortly he began gagging to throw up. Took him outside and he was hacking to throw up over and over. Nothing. He dropped down to rest. Get up and do it again. Foam at mouth and drool. Came inside. Sphynx position or stand. Will not lay on side. Today 3 small salmon fillets for him to eat. Won't eat dry dog food. Will eat beef, mashed potatoes and Salmon. I'm beside myself.

Hi. I’m Dr. Denise, a licensed veterinarian and I'd like to help. Please give me a moment while I review your concerns.

Do you recall the diagnosis for Oscar after the xrays were taken?

Did he have bloodwork done yesterday?

How is his breathing? Comfortable/labored? Closed mouth/open mouth?

Are you able to count how many breaths he is taking in a minute?

Diagnosis was they weren't quite sure whether there's. Problem. Gave me 2 meds, doxycycline and prednisolone for him. Come back in 2 weeks. Bloodwork not done yesterday. Rectal temperature was fine. Dropped 12 pounds since August. Labored breathing sometimes mouth open but mostly closed.

I'm still waiting for your reply. Dr Denise. Says you're online but no response to me.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

My apologies for the delay. There must have been a connection issue and I was not alerted to your responses until now.

I am very concerned about Oscar's labored/congested breathing, lack of appetite and weight loss.

Given the medications that was prescribed: Doxycycline (an antibiotic) and Prednisolone (a steroid), it seems that your vet suspects a bacterial and/or inflammatory process for Oscar. This could include pneumonia or bronchitis.

Doxycycline can cause stomach upset and nausea, especially if given on an empty stomach.

If he is not eating well or keeping his pills down, I strongly recommend that you have him re-examined by his veterinarian and have bloodwork done. This will be an important step to get more information about the cause of his illness.

His symptoms may be a sign of an infection (bacterial or fungal) of the lungs, heart disease or a metabolic condition causing his excessive thirst and weight loss (like Cushings disease).

I'm sorry that he's not feeling well. The next step would be bloodwork to get more information about his condition.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am here to answer all the questions you have. If you have no other questions, I would greatly appreciate your positive review (5 stars). Your review helps connect Experts with other customers so your input is highly appreciated, and it is the only way that I am compensated. Thank you!
