We bouHta rescue dog...

We bouHta rescue dog at the humane society 2 weeks ago. She was being treated for kennel cough. I have an 8 yr old chihuauhua lhasho mix that has now gotten the symptoms of kennel cough, she has a runny nose, lethargy, no appetite and the cough

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name?

Esme

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Esme?

She is normally active and healthy, now she is restless at night, and the runny nose and cough are the main things which lead me to believe it's also kennel cough

You're most likely to be correct as the infectious tracheobronchitis complex ("kennel cough") is quite contagious. Thankfully, most dogs will normalize unaided within 1-3 weeks of the onset of their signs and for that reason I rarely treat with an antibiotic unless my patient worsens rather than improves over the initial week from the onset of their signs. Coughing can be addressed with a teaspoon of honey every few hours. It's best to avoid over the counter cough suppressants which usually contain both alcohol and dextromethorphan - neither of which are recommended for dogs due to lack of efficacy and toxicity at higher doses. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

thank you, ***** ***** try the honey. I hope she gets better on her own. Should I consider the week she has had the runny nose as the first week of being sick?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Yes, that would be the onset of her signs. The quieter you can keep her, the less coughing. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
