Customer Question
I expressed my dogs...

I expressed my dogs anal glands a few days ago, and since then she has had mucus loose stools. I am afraid I may have hurt her. I withheld food for 12 hours and gradually gave her the bland diet and she continues to have runny stools. She has the same energy level she doesn't appear to be sick other than the visual stool change.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name and age?

Zoey

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Zoey?

4

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Zoey?

She takes her monthly heartgard so I wouldn't think it would be parasitic

Hi. My name is***** Thank you for your question about Zoey. You didn’t hurt her or cause this by expressing her anal glands. That is something that a lot of owners do and it is a pretty benign doing that shouldn’t cause this. What I’d be suspicious of is her eating something g that there off the bacteria in her colon and now they just can’t quiet get back to normal with the bland diet. A trip to your vet to get her started on metronidazole most likely is all that is needed here. This antibiotic corrects the bacterial overgrowth. She is otherwise not bothered so again, you didn’t hurt her. Something she ate most likely is responsible.

Are you able to call the metronidazole in?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Bruce, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago
Unfortunately no. This requires a prescription and one can only be given by a vet after an animal has been personally examined.

That really stinks because now I still have to pay 45 for a exam fee on top of the amount I have payed here. :(
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Bruce, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago
I am sorry about that. A licensed veterinarian can’t give out scripts without doing the exam on the pet. This is a legal issue and a health one as it is important to make sure with a physical exam that the correct diagnosis is made. By these means, I only have a suspicion. You could continue to do the bland diet for a few days as it might just turn things around. Diarrhea isn’t necessarily and emergency and in cases due to food issues, it can correct in a few days a lot of times.
