Customer Question
Hi, My dog is...

Hi, My dog is newly diagnosed with Cushings disease and started Vetroyl 40mg once per day. Started meds on Friday and now today has vomited 3 times. I understand this is a side effect from med and will not give him his dose tomorrow morning and will call our vet. His coat has changed( symptom m of Cushings) and just was outside in the cold. He wouldn't come in right away and now is shivering.just trying to figure out if he is just cold or is from the med thanks!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your dog eat anything unusual?

Vomited outside and only a little x 2 in house. And no he had breakfast usual dog food and meds

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

His name is ***** ***** he is 11.5 years old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Hank?

No he's been fine up until the new dx of Cushings

You have a good understanding of trilostane which appears to be relatively well tolerated in dogs but up to 63% of treated dogs can develop lethargy, mild electrolyte abnormalities (decreased serum sodium level, increased serum potassium level), vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence during the first few days of therapy secondary to steroid withdrawal. These effects are usually relatively mild and self-limiting. Withholding the drug for a few days then giving it every other day for a week may alleviate lethargy and vomiting. Please speak to Hank's vet about dividing the dose in half and giving that dose twice daily which should be better tolerated and improve the chances of a good clinical response.

The cause of his shivering may be mutifactorial. The weather, electrolyte abnormalities, steroid withdrawal, and simple discomfort can result in shivering/trembling/shaking. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
