Hi

Dr. Paul Brazzell here

I would be happy to help you.

I am quite concerned here.

Is there any vomiting or diarrhea?
Still eating and drinking?

Trouble breathing? Increased rate of breathing?

Paul

No, he's eati a little drinking okay, and peeing, he hasn't pooped in a while,
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Okay thanks.

You mention that his abdomen is stiff and swollen. Is he painful when you put pressure on his abdomen?
Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
I know its not parvo virus, I have seem a lot of that with dogs in the past, bowel obstruction, gas? With the abdomen, he doesn't yelp with pressure in the tummy, but in the chest he does
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Okay.

Does his breathing change when he is on his side?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
Kind of, he can't stay on his side long, and he yelps the whole time he's on his side
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
That's why I say kind of, he yelps on the roll and so I can't tell if his breathing is different because he can't take it
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
He's very uncomfortable
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Okay

Thank you for being so thorough.

I am trying to determine whether this is musculoskeletal (disc, lyme disease/arthritis, trauma) or thoracic- heart, lungs.

It is sounding more and more like a pain thing versus the latter

Do you agree with that?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
Yeah, it was sudden onset, and started yesterday. It does seem like a pain thing, but he hasn't had trauma that I know of.
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
He's been more needy of affection, I can tell he's worried
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
It is getting worse, he can't lay down very long at all now
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
Its getting worse, if you even touch his front legs he cries
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Okay

You need to take him to the emergency clinic

Is there one nearby?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Its 50 miles away, and I'm broke and my car is on a donut... I don't know what to do. We love him, my 7 year old is super sad, I'm a single dad trying to raise two young boys and I don't have the money, I feel so awful
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
I've had him longer than both my boys, and my oldest boy loves him more than anything
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Okay

We can try giving Aspirin at 10.0 mg/pound with some food now

Move him to a padded area and place him in sternal recumbency (on his chest)

Lets see if we can get him confortable

Paul

Its helping, he can lay down a little bit. He still yelps once in a while, but he hasn't for about 15 minutes. Could it be a gastro thing?
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

That is what I was wondering.

How is he doing now?
Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
He's the same as he was last night. He doesn't seem any worse
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
He sure isn't any better though
