My 13 year old Border Collie has been vomiting most of the day

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the Border Collie eat anything unusual?

The only thing I can think of is he ingested 4 canine aspirin the vomit is mostly mucous in the last several hours.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the Border Collie's name?

Sawyer

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Sawyer?

He has a sensitive stomach.

Friend, if he took 4 tablets of 300mg of aspirin it is possible this could be the cause of the vomiting; at this dose, we can even see gastrointestinal bleeding. Can there be other causes? Yes. Other common causes are ingestion of a foreign body, pancreatitis, or even part of a systemic disease, etc. to name a few causes. In this case, I would recommend a hands-on examination with your family veterinarian to rule out other causes besides aspirin. In the meantime, this is what you can do:

1- Do not give things like Pepto Bismol or Imodium. Start him on Pepcid AC (famotidine) 10mg 1.5 tablets every 12 hours for the next 7-10 days. You can buy Pepcid AC over the counter in any pharmacy.

2- No food or water for 4-6 hours. Need to give his gastrointestinal tract time to rest.

3- After 4-6 hours offer a small amount of water. Wait half hour, if no vomiting, offer a small amount of rice (50%) and boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (50%) 4-6 times a day. Keep on this diet for several days then wean into regular diet.

4- Follow up with your family veterinarian for a hands on examination.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service. See you again soon!
