Customer Question
Yorkie 4 lbs 11 years...
Yorkie 4 lbs 11 years old . She is very lethargic . Barely moves . History with me as she was given to me for companionship as I live alone have my two babies . Since I've had her periodically she will get dead still , won't move or show any signs of hearing you and eyes just like she's dead . Only lasts one to two minutes no movement as if ceasing. However she has been very still and very weak when she gets up and will not drink water unless she licks it off my fingers . Will take a few bites of Turkey but not eating the rice . She seems to get better then back to same in minutes . Please help me as this has gone on for 24 hrs now. I'm afraid to leave her side at all .

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I'm sorry to hear of this with Izzy. Her change in mentation (mental status) suggests encephalopathy (brain disorder) which can be intracranial (within the skull) in origin such as brain tumor or extracranial (outside the skull) in origin such as a poorly functioning liver or kidneys which are intoxicating her brain. A poorly functioning liver due to microvascular dysplasia and/or a portosystemic shunt (both are vascular anomalies associated with the liver) is an important consideration in any Yorkie and so a thorough physical and neurologic exam by Izzy's vet should include diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests and serum bile acid testing should be included in the blood tests as such testing is most sensitive for assessing liver function. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
