Can you clarify for me, please, if both eyes are excessively tearing (epiphora) with a mucoid discharge or is only his right eye so effected? Does "half mask" imply blepherospasm (squinting), elevation of the third eyelid, or both?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
Right eye only, mucus and squinting and later in the day all the way closed, no issues with left eye.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Thank you. When just one eye is affected I need to consider that his allergies most likely to be causing his paw chewing - atopy/allergies to environmental allergens and food intolerance are most common - aren't responsible for what you're seeing. My primary concern is corneal ulceration but trauma and any number of ocular disorders can involve just one eye. It's important that his vet attend to him at your earliest convenience if only because eyes can "go south" in a hurry. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish. (I have a home in the 707 area code/Forestville.)

Do you think I should make an appointment with my local vet or go to UC Davis?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Your local vet should be your first stop. If the vet isn't comfortable treating Blue, he/she can refer you to a specialist near you. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

Do you have an idea of any remedy to try on Elmers eye before going to vet?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

That wouldn't be smart. As I mentioned earlier, eyes need to be attended to as soon as possible. The safest drops or ointments you can instill are artifical tears available in your local drug store.

Thank you so much, for some reason I did not get the first text from you suggesting I go straight away to vet. Sorry for confusion and I will call for appointment immediately. Regards....Reed, alias Elmer Reed Female Human
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

You're quite welcome. No worries. I'm pleased to hear that Elmer will be attended to shortly. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.

Unfortunately no one can see him until Monday! How far is Forestville from Benicia. Lol kidding
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Ugh. Use a lot of artifical tears in that eye until then. I used to work in Concord. I used to work everywhere...
