I have a 5 year old neutered boxer that just started limping…

Customer Question
I have a 5 year...
I have a 5 year old neutered boxer that just started limping on his front left leg this evening. He was fine all day long with no limping. My husband and I were gone a few hours this evening and we noticed the limping after we returned home.
He has a history of a right CCL tear which was repaired two years ago. He also has a left partial CCL tear which the vet is monitoring. This summer he became sick with vomiting and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. In June he was put on Royal Canin low fat dog food.
Up until tonight he was playing with our other boxer, and running outside. His appetite is normal, he drinks plenty of water and urine/bowel appears normal.
I tried manipulating his left front leg while he was sitting down tonight and he let me move his paw around, but when I tried to lift his leg up and manipulate the leg closer to the shoulder area, he pulled away from me. He doesn’t whimper or whine so it doesn’t appear like he is in any pain. It doesn’t seem to bother him when he lays on his left side.
We know that boxers are prone to cancer and we are very concerned about the possibility of osteosarcome. If this was osteosarcoma, wouldn’t he be acting like he is in pain? Everything else appears normal including his appetite. Are there any other symptoms that he would have if this was osteosarcoma? Are there any other causes of sudden onset front leg limping?
Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here.

I am NOT too worried here and nor should you be.

It sounds like this came on suddenly?

Any other clinical signs?
Paul

A little restless when trying to sleep, and difficulty getting up from a sitting or lying down position. When he tries to get up he pushes himself up with his front legs first and then gets his back legs up. I’m
concerned that he may have hip dysplasia or arthritis too.

We live in Nebraska. High temperatures are around 45 to 50 degrees.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Okay

I asked because I was wondering about Lyme disease

And no we are NOT dealing with osteosarcoma- This came on far too fast.

Here is what I would do:

Give him 10,.0 mg/pound Aspirin now

Let him rest overnight and then evaluate in AM

I think that he just overexerted himself and may have a sprain or strain

IF he is still lame in the AM then we can decide if he needs to be examined.

It is possible that he has a pinched nerve in his neck also

Make sense?
