Customer Question
My 9 month, 90...

My 9 month, 90 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy just swallowed a cooked chicken leg bone whole. We saw him get it out of the trash, yelled at him to drop it and instead he just gulped it down. Did not chew, so it didn't sprinter. What should I watch for? Does he need to go to the vet right away?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name?

His name is Bo

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Bo?

I don't think so

Hi.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here.

We can try and get him to throw it up.

But you will have to give a lot of 3% hydrogen peroxide- about 5 tablespoons.

This bone does have the potential of getting lodges somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract

I took him down to our regular vet when they opened. He said to NOT try to make him vomit, could cause more damage. To feed pumpkin with regular food to increase stool volume and hope for best. 4 days laterBo is fine. Appears he digested the bone (never saw a sign of it in his stool). Breeder and vet both say that after 4 days he should be good to go.

Great!

It is always a tough call on the vomiting thing

He was a pretty large dog so I felt the induction of vomiting would work okay

Anyways it is all good!
