what could be the issue with him? He was still playful after the dry heaving
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gary, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Sorry for the long wait- I just logged on and saw this.

If Diesel is otherwise acting normal, then a couple episodes of dry heaving wouldn't really bother me.

The cause may be that he was excited and swallowed air- that can irritate the lining of the stomach and lead to dry heaving. It could also be from over-eating and then having some nausea.

Do puppies normally just eat what’s in front of them even if they are full? Or will they stop like adult dogs? He did seem to have his side protruding on one side, which was soncernonf me, but it was the only one side, not the other
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gary, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

A 12 week old puppy having 2 cups of food and some cottage cheese could definitely over distend the stomach enough to where he has some "food bloat." These can take a good 12-24 hours to allow the stomach to fully empty. During that time, they're often uncomfortable, they can dry heave and sometimes bring up some kibble when they retch.

Many puppies will just eat until the food is gone. Many adult dogs are like that as well. I really try to get owners to meal feed vs free feeding. Free feeding can lead to over eating, food bloat, and eventually obesity. I would get in the habit of meal feeding twice daily and then picking the food up if he doesn't eat.

I'm sure his stomach is bloated over the left side- that's pretty consistent with food bloat. That's where the stomach sits.

So, i would hold off on feeding him for a good 12-24 hours. After that time, you can give 1/2 of a normal meal. 12 hours after that, go back to normal feeding. Check the bag to see how much to feed him based on his age and weight.
