Six and 1/2 year old Leonberger, since yesterday morning…

Customer Question
Six and 1/2 year...

Six and 1/2 year old Leonberger, since yesterday morning would not bend to eat or drink unless I held bowl up for him. Occasionally issues little sound of pain, sometimes when climbing onto couch, most time not. Occasional sound while lying normally on floor.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name?

Pookah !

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Pookah?

He's been quite healthy since birth, occasional bouts of diahrrea (sic) for <24 hrs. Has had continuous tick protection (we're in CT). However 11 months ago, as a result of a fall, he had a plate installed on lower right foreleg. After 4 months of protected recovery, he regained fairly normal activity.

I'm sorry to hear of this with Pookah. You've described quite a painful neck as is seen with degenerative disk disease (a "slipped disk") or perhaps cervical (neck) spondylomyelopathy ("wobbler syndrome"). Less commonly, steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis exists. Pookah's vet will want to carefully palpate his neck and is likely to recommend X-rays of that area. Conservative therapy for a disk involves a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) such as carprofen or meloxicam, a narcotic analgesic such as tramadol, and a skeletal muscle relaxant such as methocarbamol or diazepam. Keeping Pookah as quiet as possible at this time can avoid his hurting himself further. Most dogs will remiss from a simple disk within 3 weeks. If paresis (weakness) or paralysis arises, Pookah would need the attention of his vet at your earliest convenience. Those patients may be surgical candidates for spinal decompression. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
