Customer Question
My one year old...

My one year old Chocolate Labrador had been scratching and chewing nonstop for the past two to three weeks. She has chewed by back by her tail so much that she is losing all her hair on her back and there are like 3 little open wounds there now. She has also lost hair on the back of her back legs. She looks to have a red dotty rash on her belly and arms. Also, around her lips look like red swollen areas. She hasn't had any change in diet or environmental changes in the household and only goes in our fenced in front yard to potty. We seen a few fleas on her about a month ago but none since then. I'm really concerned as a visit to her vet is over $150 that I don't have right now. She is miserable and I feel so terrible about it! Please help :(

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Is the dog bleeding a lot?

No, it's not even really dripping or running blood. It's just where it's opened up has blood on the wound.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Phew. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

Not that I can think of.

Hello my name is***** and I am a licensed veterinarian with over 9 years of experience. I am hoping to help you with your pet today. Since I can’t physically exam your pet, I may need to respond with several follow up questions so I can best help you. Remember there is no limit on how many questions you can ask to in order to clarify any information I have provided regarding your pet. I just have a few initial questions to ask to gather some more information if you don’t mind? Has this every happend before? What did you do to treat the fleas in the past?

She did have a small rash on her belly as a puppy, but it went away and resolved on its own in a few days and did not seem to bother her. She uses the Frontline Plus.

Okay thanks for the additional information. It sounds like she is having some type of allergy or allergic reaction to something. If you can't go to your veterinarian as of yet then you can try Benadryl to see if it helps and you can also try a medicated shampoo to see if it helps with the allergies. You can Click here for an example of a shampoo that you can use.

Like regular benadryl?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Alleyne, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Yes you can use plain benadryl. It is usually 1 mg / lb in most cases for dogs. It just can't have any other active ingredients

Would it be okay to give her that with an allergy aid I purchased from Petco? I gave her that earlier and rubbed some Hydrocortisone lotion made for dogs on her. Would those have adverse reactions if used jointly with benadryl?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Alleyne, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Do you know what is in the allergy aid? Is it a pill?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
It's a chewable one. Let me check. It has the following Active Ingredients: Quercetin, Grape Seed Extract, Omega 3, Alpha-Amylase, Lipase, Cellulase, Protease, Fructooligosaccharides, and Probiotics.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Alleyne, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Okay thanks for the details. That should not be a problem with the Benadryl at all. Those are all natural ingredients that are not contraindicated. Also the hydrocortisone since it is topical won't interact with the Benadryl as well.
