The easiest way to determine if she is truly pregnant would be an ultrasound (28days after potential breeding) or an xray (45 days after potential breeding). There is also a progesterone bloodtest that can be done.

Has her belly started to distend (as would be expected in a true pregnancy)?

Has her appetite increased?

You mention nausea. Has she had any increased thirst/urination or discharge from her vulva?

Her belly has always been on the big side. Her name is***** haven’t noticed any discharge. Her thirst has increased and I’ve noticed my male covering up her urine with his. She also has become more protective with him/over him. She has also become more aggressive with strangers (growling). I did take her to the vet here locally 2weeks ago thinking she could’ve took the week of September 25th. I’m now thinking it was more towards the 3rd of OCTOBER. That was the only 2 times the two were around each other. Would she show all these signs with a false pregnancy? Also at what week/day would I be able to feel movement if she is pregnant
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Dog Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Yes, all of these signs can be present with a false pregnancy.

Symptoms include:

  • Nesting
  • Mothering inanimate objects
  • Lactating (giving milk)
  • Abdominal distension
  • She can even appear to go into labor.

Symptoms of a false pregnancy can persist for 6-12 weeks.

If she is overweight, it may be impossible to feel movement of fetuses. Though, in an average size dog, movement might be felt in the week prior to delivery. The gestation length of a dog is usually 63 days.

How long would a false pregnancy go? If this is the case then do dogs morn the loss
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Also if false will her teats and vulva ever go back to normal size?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Dog Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Dogs can remain symptomatic with enlarged mammary glands, vulva and mothering of objects for 6-12 weeks. The name of the syndrome is actually a false-nomer because hormonally, their body does not think they are pregnant but actually that they gave birth (hense the prolonged mammary development).

No, dogs do not usually morn the loss as they don't associate their symptoms with actual puppies.

Yes, once the hormones of the false pregnancy resolve, the mammary and vulvar development should resolve as well.
