Customer Question
I have a 9...

I have a 9 year old boston terrier and she has had a second episode of vomiting and then passing out not breathing. The first time we thought it was phlegm so i was holding her vertical head down. My husband stuck his finger up there to clear anything out. she had trouble breathing after that. We took her to the vet and gave her an antibiotic. She got better. Now it is a month maybe 6 weeks and she had an episode again last night. she recovered as soon as I picked her up vertical. Took about 40 min to get her calmed down. I used a drop of lavender on a kleenex and put it near her to help calm her down. I am trying to figure out what is going on

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

No, actually she didn't seem interested in her dinner last night. She did eat a piece of roasted chicken treat.

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

No, she has been pretty healthy. She does talk a lot and make a lot of throaty noise, more than our other two boston terriers. She has seemed to be more so noisy since the round of antibiotics

Hi.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here.

This sounds like vagal-vagal reflex.

The act of vomiting causes the heart to alow down and then they faint.

But we also have to consider a possible bradyarrhythmia (abnormal and slow heart rate). This could also be the problem.

Does she vomit often? Or is this just a short term thing?

And finally she is a Boston so Brachycephalic syndroms is relevant but she would have had issues with that along time ago

This has only happened twice, I'd say the two episodes one last night, previous about 4-6 weeks ago which she got a 14 day round of clavamox. She has been a very healthy dog.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Great!

That makes me happy.

I would have them do an electrocardiogram to check her heart rate and rhythm

And we will chock these two episodes of vomiting up to her being a dog- my dogs always seemed to be throwing up something.

IF the vomiting recurs, even sporadically then something like inflammatory bowel disease should be considered and an abdominal ultrasound done.

Make sense?

Paul
