Customer Question
Hi - I have...

Hi - I have a 5 month old English Cream Golden Retriever. The last couple of nights he's been vomiting during the night/early morning - usually nothing comes up. It happened a few nights ago, then again the last 2 nights (a little came up this morning). He's eating well (3x a day), and no problems pooping or peeing....energy level is high, he seems just fine....should I be concerned?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the Golden Retriever eat anything unusual?

Not that I know of.....he's been eating snow (he seems to think it's the greatest thing ever)....and of course whatever else he can find around, but nothing out of the ordinary. He did eat a nylabone a few days ago...

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the Golden Retriever?

No - he's had all his shots. He's on Froom's large breed puppy food, and milk bone puppy biscuits....no changes in his diet

In a puppy of this age the primary concern always would be a foreign body ingestion....it is very possible that the nylabone could be causing this...those are extremely hard to digest and take a long time to get through the GI tract if they do. As you know puppies tend to eat anything that is not nailed down. At my clinic we do many foreign body surgeries always on young dogs....this is because of their teething and their constant need to chew. Some of the things they eat will be socks, remotes, plastic items, bones, underwear, trash, etc. I cannot diagnose your pet because I cannot examine or take xrays but what I can tell you is that more than likely something your puppy ate is causing these current clinical signs. And yes it could be the nylabone that is causing what you are seeing.

Your options are to go to your vet and have them do an exam and xrays to look for partial obstructions or wait it out....whatever he ate may pass....but if he develops lack of appetite, vomiting that will not stop or that is frequent, any change in attitude you should get him to your vet as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely, DRB
