What can cause a dog to wake up several times from sleeping…

Customer Question
What can cause a dog...
What can cause a dog to wake up several times from sleeping and then loudly lick the nose, smacking lips and blowing through nose as if having trouble breathing? Snorts, a bit after this, finds a better position and then falls asleep again. She lately (last 4 months or so) sometimes coughs after drinking water or licking her paws (1-2 times a day some days, none on others). Cough is not productive, more like clearing throat. This has been going on for many months, but lately I see it worsening as it happens every night and wakes me up. The dog also lately changes sleeping position more often during the day or wakes up and sighs (inhale/exhale) or stretches as if uncomfortable and looks for my whereabouts at times. I look at her nose and sometimes she has a clear, watery discharge. During the day, pants often when walking around the house, seems to also suffer the heat more. We live in Arizona and my husband thinks her nose is just dry as we have very little humidity, while I think the worse (lung cancer, -maybe as a result of some lumps on her chest she has that I haven't has an opportunity to get checked out yet- or heart disease or lar par). But with lung cancer, wouldn't she be coughing more? This worsening has been going on for about 2 months. She is a 10 year old Rottweiler, eats well. She does better during the day, at night her symptoms of nose/lip licking seem to worsen. Can it be pain? We are getting a humidifier installed this week and my husband wants to see if it makes a difference before going to the vet (he thinks I exaggerate and worry too much considering that she eats well, likes to get up often to check what I am cooking and is acting pretty normal most of the time).
