Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Altman, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

The black "licorice" really isn't licorice at all but, instead, contains a very small percentage of either "licorice extract" or "licorice root extract". The risk of glycyrrhizin (a chemical found in licorice which can lower potassium levels) toxicity - is near nil.

I would expect mild gastrointestinal distress - inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea - from ingesting such an unfamiliar food - but there's no reason to believe that Peyton is in danger.

If seen then please take a few precautions:

- Pepcid (famotidine) 0.25 mg per pound every 12 hours for 3 days

- Leash walks to help the licorice pass more readily of >15 minutes

- Tonight bland diet of white rice and lean boiled meat such as chicken in small more frequent meals but waiting at least 12 hours after vomiting has subsided if there is this symptom

Please let me know if you have any additional questions I can assist with or clarify.
