My dog was diagnosed...

My dog was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuritis. Gradually her jaw function returned after about 4 weeks. After the jaw function returned I️ noticed muscle atrophy in her head. Her jaw is functioning properly and she doesn’t seem to be in any pain but now there is muscle atrophy. She is a 7 year old Labrador Retriever. Our vet placed her on Prednisone treatment. Everything that i find online indicates muscle loss after MMM but not Trigeminal Neuritis. Any thoughts?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name?

Mollie

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Mollie?

She has been relatively healthy. We adopted her from a shelter 2 years ago. She was heartworm positive but was treated successfully.

So, long term prednisone can cause significant loss of the muscle mass on the top of the head. Very common is dogs that are on prednisone chronically. It will go away once the prednisone is stopped. With trigeminal neuritis, Mollie may be on prednisone for several months and slowly weaned off. Please ask any follow up questions.

The prednisone wasn’t administered until after she muscle loss began. She wasn’t given any medication for the Trigeminal Neuritis.

We did request a blood test for 2M to get confirmation but the results aren’t back yet. No other tests have been performed. Her jaw function and eye sight aren’t affected. She is eating and drinking normally. What are the long term effects of this muscle issue? Will the muscle regenerate? How do we know how long to continue the Prednisone? Should she be on the Prednisone at this point?
Dog Veterinarian: Kelly Hill, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

If the muscle wasting is secondary to the prednisone, then it is typically benign. It is atrophy of a decrease in the size of the muscles and not a loss of muscle, so they can build up again. For suspected auto immune diseases, the prednisone is continued for up to 4 weeks before starting a slow taper, with the dose decreased every two weeks while monitoring clinical signs. It is possible that other nerves are also affected and the muscle loss on her head is associated with the initial inflammatory condition.
