Customer Question
My beloved dog Luck...

My beloved dog Luck (10 years old, 60 lbs, lab/pit mix) ate an entire cooked chicken yesterday around 2 pm. Since then he has had one normal stool (for him that is usually a bit loose). He didn't get any dinner last night and wouldn't eat any breakfast this morning. He went to deficate this morning and strained to produce a small amount of loose stool. Should I take him to get xtrays today?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if the pit will be able to digest that. What is the pit's name?

Lucky. Text box says Dr. Andy would be responding.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Lucky?

No. Text box says Dr. Andy would be responding.

Hi. My name is***** Thank you for your question. This is one of those situations with Lucky where he could have a couple things going on. He could just have some simple stomach upset and lower colon upset from eating this cooked chicken. Eating all this could have temporarily thrown things off. To be honest, the loose stools aren't overly surprising. What I'd say is a bigger red flag is vomiting. Vomiting would be a big sign of a possible blockage from the bones that were eaten. Dogs can eat bones and have them pass through with no issues. But, every once in a great while, they can cause a blockage. Could he have one? There is no vomiting at this time and I may be something that is coming or not. If he's drinking water and for the most part comfortable, time may be the big factor needed. X-rays can be taken to assess the amount of bone in there, but plain films most likely won't indicate blockage or not. If you did go to your vet / ER clinic, they could get medication going to treat the loose stool.

Thanks. He won't eat much but should I try to feed him some rice or metamucil to get this stool firmer and moving through?
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
Ok, nevermind. I'll take him to UF ER today.
