Customer Question
My dog is not...

My dog is not eating and not acting normal. He is not his fun loving self. He just lays there and stares almost like he is depressed. He is drinking plenty of fluids. He wouldn't even eat some lunch meat I tried to feed him.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help your dog. What is the dog's name and age?

His name is ***** ***** he will be 4 this month. He is an English Mastiff

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Titus?

He turns 4 this month

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Titus?

These are the only symptoms that I have noticed.

I am sorry to learn Titus is not feeling well. I will do my best to help you today. First I need to ask you a few questions so that I can be well informed and give you the best advice.

1- Any vomiting, diarrhea or coughing?

2- Did he get into anything or eat something out of the ordinary?

3- How long has this been going on?

4- Any pre existing medical conditions?

He started acting weird yesterday. There has not been any vomiting, diarrhea or coughing. As far as we know he has not got into anything. He has no pre existing medical conditions.

2- Can you take a look at his gums and see if they are pink or pale?

3- Can you take his rectal temperature?

Friend, lethargy and decreased appetite are very non-specific symptoms and can be related to many different medical conditions that affect dogs. I will not be able to pinpoint the exact underlying cause without a hands-on examination and some testing, I am sorry. But, common causes are neuromuscular disorders, infections, ingestion of a foreign body, kidney or liver disease, etc. to name a few causes.
In this case, your dog will need a hands on examination by a veterinarian, blood work (chemistry profile & CBC) and urinalysis as an initial screening test to determine the exact underlying cause. Treatment will be based on exam and test results. If cost is a concerned I would look into your local ASPCA or Shelter where they often offer veterinary services at a lower cost. In the meantime, feed him a bland diet of rice with boiled boneless chicken or ground beef; if possible blend the food and force feed him with a turkey baster.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service. See you again soon!
