He is a 15 year old black lab and chow mix he has been losing weight fast and has started drooling a ridiculous amount he’s still eating and drinking but he seems depressed too if that makes sense

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know what to do with the drooling. What is the dog's name?

Ramses

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Ramses?

He has a fatty tumor on his right side when I took him to the vet they said it was just extra fatty tissue and he was a lot heavier at the time and that was about 2 years ago

I am so sorry to hear your pet is showing these symptoms

The primary cause of drooling and licking lips is nausea in dogs. Other possible causes include an abscessed tooth, a foreign body such as a stick in the mouth, a mass orally, or ingesting something that is bitter or caustic.

So in this situation the ideal thing is to treat as if it it nausea because it is the most readily treatable condition and if there is no change in the next 12 hours a veterinary exam is warranted to determine the underlying cause and begin appropriate treatment

- Pepcid (famotidine) 0.25 mg/ pound every 12 hours which is for nausea and stomach acid buildup
- Take a nice long walk which increases gi motility, reduces abdominal cramping and nausea but please no grass eating
- Water only in moderation
- In the morning small frequent meals of a bland diet of white rice and lean boiled meat such as chicken

Indications your dog should be seen by a veterinary er sooner include: sticky gums that are pale, yellow, blue, purple, temperature rectally >103.5, progressive lethargy with less responsiveness to you, vomiting or diarrhea that includes blood, resting respiratory rate (breaths per minute) >60, swollen abdomen.

I hope this information makes sense but please let me know how else I can assist you both today. With his age and symptoms my primary concern are going to be a tooth abscess or a mass in the oral cavity or larynx with the weight loss and increased salivation combination
