Goldendoodle, she started scratching...

Goldendoodle, she started scratching Right ear and shaking head. Tried ear mite med, did not help. Have been doing a homeopathic remedy of coconut oil and garlic 2x in the last 24 hours. Ear is red, and very warm.What can I give her to treat her?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Using the wrong medication for fleas can be dangerous. You should definitely talk to the Veterinarian. What is the Goldendoodle's name and age?

Madiline, 8. She has no fleas. Ear infection!

Hi this is DRB and I would be happy to help you with this.....ear mites in dogs are very rare indeed and usually ear infections are secondary to either food or environmental allergy or both....there is unfortunately no home remedy that you can use to treat standard ear infections in dogs.... you will have to see your vet for this but when you see your vet you did not need to armed with very specific information. You should insist that your vet put your dog on a food trial for food allergy......Goldendoodles have rampant food allergy which is usually acquired later in life. I see it everyday. Second, I would get some mometamax to treat your dog's ear infection and some apoquel to stop the itching. Also make sure your dog during food trial gets no other foods or treats and must have acceptable heratworm prevention like Iverhart max with a topical flea control during the food trial. If there was a way for you to handle this at home I would tell you but I have been seeing these cases for 28 years and there is no other way...let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely, DRB

otherwise I would not give her anything because it may interfere with what your vet uses.....don't let your vet give her an NSAID for ear pain.....i would use apoquel and mometamax and add tramadol if needed..
