Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner, but can you tell me:

Does he only stumble when handled?

If you press on his belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain? Sore anywhere else?

Any retching, gagging, lip licking, drooling, or vomiting?

Any change to his breathing or drinking?

Are his gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

Could he have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human meds, etc)?

good morning,he was stumbling and unbalanced while walking... he didnt want to eat. He did have something in his mouth that he picked up from outside, but I couldnt get it from him. He has bad habit of chewing picking up and chewing on cigarettes. I touched his belly, that didnt seem to brother him, no vomiting.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. B., Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Oh dear,

That is a very bad habit for him to have indeed and I am concerned that may be our culprit here. Cigarettes (even the butts) contain a number of toxins that are harmful to dogs and often we will see GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, appetite loss), lethargy, wobbliness, changes in their breathing and heart rates. As well, in severe cases, we can even see tremors, seizures, and collapse.

Now thankfully Reo's signs sound mild for a cigarette toxicity and in that case we could try symptomatic care to see if we can help him. To start, the appetite loss suggests nausea, so we can treat with an antacid like Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid) or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac). Whichever you use, we'd give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption and of course double check with your vet before use if your wee one has any known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. After do try an easily digestible diet like cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, scrambled egg, or meat baby food (as long as its free from garlic or onion powder). Ideally, we want to offer this as small frequent meals to keep the stomach settled. As well, we do want him to drink (to flush out toxins), so offer lactose free milk or low salt broth if he needs some coaxing.

If we do that and he starts to settle, we're happy. But any worsening of signs or if he is too nauseous to eat despite the above, then we'd want his local vet to check him for this toxicity as well as for other concerns (pancreatitis, gastritis, possible brain lesions but less likely) to ensure we target treatment and nip this in the bud.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
