Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I am sorry you are worried about your dog bleeding. There are many possible reasons for her to have blood from her anus.

She could have an infected anal gland. These glands are not visible; they sit inside the anus.

She could have "colitis", an inflamed colon lining which could be from many things: infection, something she ate, parasites.

Is she eating? If you lift her lip to check her gums, are they pink in color?

Her gums are deep pink. Some bleeding around the teeth. Her teeth need cleaning.
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Please answer. I have limited funds.

Deep pink color is good; I would be worried if they were pale.

Please answer.

Did you see my answer above? I said that this could be colitis, or anal gland infection. I would need to examine her to tell you if this is an anal gland infection, and if she needs antibiotics.

Is she eating? Any vomiting?

She is eating. No vomiting.

If the blood you are seeing is red, that means it is not digested, that it it coming from the colon lining or an anal gland. If she were bleeding internally, the blood would be digested, and appear black and tarry.

The blood was bright red.

Good she is eating.

If this is an anal gland infection, she needs antibiotics. You can only get prescription medication from a veterinarian who knows her or has examined her.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

So bright red blood is not as scary to me as black tarry blood. She may have a bout of colitis that might get better on its own. If it persists, I would have her anal glands checked by an internal exam of her anus/colon.

Is she safeuntil tomorrow morning when she can see her vet? What should i do in the meantime? The bleeding has stopped.
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Is an anal gland treatable? Curable?

If her gums are not pale, and she is eating, she is safe to wait for her regular veterinarian tomorrow.

I would feeder normally and just monitor her.

If she has an anal gland infection, a course of antibiotics should take care of it. If this was a bout of colitis and the bleeding stops, she may not need any treatment.

Thank you. I am particularly stressed because my previous dog died after 8 months of bleeding issues. He was only 8. A poodle. My current dog is a 9 lb Maltipoo. Don't want to lose her.

You are welcome. As long as her gums are pink, not pale, she is not losing a dangerous amount of blood.
