Customer Question
I am looking after...

I am looking after my boyfriends dog so I apologise if I'm just nervous out of inexperience but we went out walking for a few hours earlier. He ended up going for a swim in a river but getting caught out by the current. When he got himself out he seemed fine and carried on for another hour. He's been home a few hours but is breathing fast and making more noise than usual through his nose. He stomach is gurgling and he's farting quite a lot. Please tell me he's ok

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

Nothing on his feet and he isn't paying attention to any particular area. He's just lying down on his side

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

Pik, he's a 5 year old Lab

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Pik?

No he's a very healthy dog. He climbed Snowdon 2 months back. I'm concerned about his breathing but I'm not sure what's normal

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

I believe that you're seeing signs that Pik ingested and inhaled quite a bit of river water. I expect that he has normalized by now but you'll now need to watch for diarrhea arising should the water have been contaminated by the protozoan Giardia. May I have an update on Pik, please?
