Has Eddie ever been diagnosed with arthritis in his hips or spine? Were x-rays taken? Is he on any medications or has he taken any medication for the weak hips?

Hasn't had exrays or taken any medicine
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gabby, Dog Veterinarian replied 10 months ago

Thank you.

In a dog his age, with weakness in the hips, arthritis would be likely cause.

He could actually have arthritis changes in his hips or the spine.

Both of those can cause pain so they do not use the joints as they should and they lose muscle strength.

The arthritis can also put abnormal pressure on the nerves in that area and the loss of complete nerve function can cause weakness.

If possible, it would be a good idea to have him examined in person just to make sure it is arthritis.

Because other things like an issue with internal organ function could make him weak.

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gabby, Dog Veterinarian replied 10 months ago

If it is arthritis then pain medications and medications to help joint function would be prescribed.

But one the arthritis is there then there is no cure.

Just symptomatic treatment.

An over the counter product you can try is "Cosequin."

It helps maintain joint cartilage.

He most likely will need something for pain as well.

The vet has medications for pain that are not as hard on the liver, kidenys, and stomach lining.

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gabby, Dog Veterinarian replied 10 months ago

The only over the counter pain medication dogs can take is aspirin.

5 mg per pound of dog every 12 hours with a large meal to help prevent stomach upset.

But I would be very careful with the aspirin as it can affect the kidneys, liver, and stomach lining.

Maybe just give one or two doses.
