Customer Question
My German shepherd went to...
My German shepherd went to his normal groomers and came home with excessive itching, excessive panting and dragging his hind legs, about four hours ago. Two hours ago I gave him 4 Benadryl but he's still panting heavily and dragging his hind legs around. He's 4 and in excellent shape, this is unusual.

1- Is he not bearing any weight on the back legs or unable to stand?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
He can stand, if I throw the ball, he will act somewhat normally. He's resting them while he eats and drinks, but keeps dragging his hind legs across the house. Normally, he does it a couple times a day to stretch but this is excessive.

1- Is he rubbing his butt on the floor or he is walking and dragging his legs?

He is walking and dragging his hind legs.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
excessively panting and itching/scratching, but it's not that hot here and the itching is normal after the groomers, but it's excessive. I can tell he isn't comfortable, if I go to check his skin out, he growls at me which is unusual.

How much does he weigh?

How many milligrams of benadryl did you give him?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
He weighs 100 LBS, and I gave him 4 Benadryl at 25 mg/each for a total of 100mg. He's in extremely great shape.

Friend, you are right to suspect an allergic reaction because of the itching. And, you have done right in starting him on Benadryl 100mg. However, I am uncertain if him dragging his legs is secondary to being itchy or could he have a neuromuscular disorder like a pinched nerve? The main concern would be a pinched nerve, that would be an emergency. Unfortunately, on history only I can not pinpoint the exact underlying cause, I am sorry. In this case, I would prefer to err on the side of caution and have him checked tonight by ER vet to rule out a neuromuscular disorder like a pinched nerve. In the meantime, keep him on Benadryl 100mg every 12 hours.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service. See you again soon!
