Customer Question
My female Chinese crested...

My female Chinese crested dog has been licking her private area nonstop. I noticed that it is red and a little swollen also it looks like she has developed a little sensitivity if I touch it because it looks like maybe she created a little abrasion sore around it. What can I do

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name and age?

Mulan and she is 2 yrs old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Mulan?

I have her a month and she is a rescue. Also, she is being treated for dry eye. I put Cyclosporine 2% in her eye 2x a day .

I am sorry to hear you are worried about Mulan's licking. If her vulva is swollen, and red, this may be an allergic reaction. It may also be she is licking because she could have a UTI, urinary tract infection.

You can apply a little Cortaid or other over the counter cortisone ointment to the red swollen area. Keep her from licking it off for few minutes after applying it so it has time to be absorbed.

If she persists in licking, I would look for and treat an underlying reason for the licking. A urinalysis is needed to check for a UTI. If she starts to lick or scratch other areas, I would suspect an allergy to something in her environment and Benadryl or prescription Apoquel might help.

Please let me know if this helps and what other questions I can answer.
