Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. The inherited and primary form of copper-associated hepatopathy defines the accumulation of copper within hepatocytes leading to hepatotoxicosis. There is an acquired and secondary form, however, which is caused by cholestatic liver disease in which the gallbladder may be involved in the disease process. This can be determined by ultrasounding of the liver and biliary tract and with an ultrasound-guided needle biopsy. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Is it possible to have more gallbladder involvement than liver with copper storage disease?

Yes, any necro-inflammatory biliary disease can result in cholestasis (bile sludging) and secondary copper accumulation. These disorders are concurrent and so determining the primary site of impairment can be difficult without liver biopsy. If a known breed (Bedlington terrier, e.g.) is affected, a primary inborn error of metabolism is assumed. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
