Dog at tom cat...

Dog at tom cat block bait, Got her to throw up within first 15 mimutes with peroxide until clear then got charcoal from vets. seemed good. ate dinner about 8 hours later. now drooling and lathargic. vet gave her prednazone? and benadryl and some stuff to sooth stomach but drooling is aweful. just feel like I am not doing enough

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

She is a 5 year old golden retriever about 65 ilbs.

Thank you for the additional information. The Tomcat product contains the neurotoxin bromethalin which causes muscle tremors, hyperexcitation, or seizures within hours after exposure. A more insidious sign - hind limb paresis - can arise in up to 5 days or more later. I believe the gastrointestinal distress you're currently seeing is due to the peroxide (which irritates the stomach lining causing emesis) and the activated charcoal that was tubed into her. This should be transient and can be addressed with an over the counter antacid such as famotidine (Pepcid) dosed at 10 mg and repeated in 12 hours. I don't see the value in prednisone or Benadryl. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

what is emesis?
Customer reply replied 10 months ago
thought maybe an allergic reaction is reason for pred and benadryl
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 10 months ago

emsis=vomiting

Yes, those drugs would address an allergic reaction but I don't see anything that would induce such a reaction. I would stop prednisone administration (or both drugs) as steroids such as prednisone can irritate the GI tract. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
