Customer Question
My dog is 16...

My dog is 16 years old. He has incontinence and wears a wrap to catch his urine. I carry him outside with the other dogs too and he will urinate outside also. He just has no control over his bladder. This morning after urinating outside, he came inside and urinated a thick, bright yellow substance. It almost looked like vomit, but it wasn't. I do not know what this is?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your dog eat anything unusual?

I am sooooo use to messes!! LOL! I have 2 seniors and a young puppy. He did not eat anything different.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Bailey

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Bailey?

He drinks constantly! He never seems to be able to get enough water. He also loves to eat. He has little use of his back legs and is deaf.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. You appear to be describing an overflow incontinence; in other words, his polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyuria (increased volume of urine) has predisposed to his inability of his bladder to accommodate such an amount of urine. These are danger signs for quite a few disorders. These include both hepatic and renal insufficiencies, urinary tract infection involving the kidneys; diabetes mellitus, Cushing's disease, hyperthyroidism - all three will also cause increased hunger (polyphagia), hypercalcemia (increased serum calcium level – often due to lymphoma), electrolyte (sodium, potassium, chloride) imbalances, and the rarer Addison's disease, diabetes insipidus, and brain tumor involving the hypothalamus. Bailey's vet will need to perform a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests in order to clarify what those symptoms are signifying.

The thick bright yellow substance isn't clear to me but suggests urine admixed with excessive mucus and/or crystals have that come out of solution. A complete urinalysis as mentioned above should be able clarify what that subtance represents. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
