Hello, I'm Dr. Kara. I have over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian and I'd like to help. Please give me a moment to review your concerns.

I'm sorry to hear that your pup ingested your 10mg Atorvastatin.

  1. How much does your pup weigh?
  2. Is she taking any other medications?
  3. Is she a healthy pup in general?

The good news is that the "statin" cholesterol lowering drugs like Atorvastatin have very low toxicity in dogs, and if she is a big dog she may show no signs of ingesting the pill at all.

These drugs block cholesterol and some fats from being absorbed from the gut, and/or block the liver from producing cholesterol.

A one time dose of 10mgs may lead to some loose stools, but that should be it. These drugs are not organ toxic and will cause any long term harm.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

I'm sorry I missed your reply last night. I worked for another hour after I answered your question, but since the site noted you as offline and I didn't hear back from you during that time I assumed you had read my response and were all set.

She is a bit on the smaller side, so you may see some loose stools, but I would not expect anything worse than that from this one time ingestion. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Hello, I wanted to make sure that you didn't have any further questions for me, and I'd like to know how things turned out for your pup. If you could give me an update that would be great, thank you, ***** *****

Is caryopteris bush toxic to dogs. No she is better than she
No she is better than she was two hours ago she is more alert and drank a bunch of water. We have what I think is a pet safe yard. She was with us today either in the yard car or house. She was totally normal than pooped in the house(very unusual) stool was formed but slightly soft. Then I had to force her outside and she just wanted to lay down in the yard. After about 20-30 minutes she got up and drank a lot of water she has not vomited. I tried to give her a very small amount of brown rice and rice/ beef canned food and she looked interested but only ate maybe one small bite. She is sleeping now … read more

our pug went blind very suddenly and also has lost some of hearing. She drinks alot and was obsessed with food to the point she would jump on the table as soon as we left to eat anything on there. This stopped after a few weeks. We took her to our vet a few weeks ago telling him she was running into things like fences but saw solid objects fine, after lots of blood work she only showed signs of high cholesterol and had gained about 3 pounds in 2 months. This past sunday she cried out once and then ran into everything both solid and not. She is confused often walks around with no purpose and sometimes has panting spells. He gave us some eye drops confirmed she is perminently blind and has lost some of her hearing. We are to return this wednesday and if she has not improved then he suggested it could be a tumor. Right now if there is not any improvement we may nedd to put her down … read more
