Jasper is lethargic, shaking and has shallow breathing.

Customer Question
Jasper is lethargic, shaking...

Jasper is lethargic, shaking and has shallow breathing.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name and age?

Jasper. He's 12.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Jasper?

He has a history of liver issues. Leptospirosis last year, and an infection a couple of months ago. We have him on a special diet, prescribed by our vet.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Jasper, please?

While his symptoms are important, they're not pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder. At his advanced age, however, any untoward symptoms should be considered worrisome in particular "shallow breathing" accompanied by a respiratory rate exceeding 30 breaths per minute at rest or while asleep. I wouldn't hesitate to have a vet attent to Jasper ast your earliest convenience. To determine the urgency of doing so, please assess his vital signs for me...

1) Check his gum and tongue color. They should be nicely pink - not whitish (anemia) or bluish/greyish (cyanosis/hypoxia/lack of oxygen to his tissues).

2) Check his respiratory rate. He should be taking less than 30 breaths/minute and greater than 6-8 breaths/minute while asleep or at rest.

3) Take his rectal temperature. Any body thermometer will do when placed 1.5" into his rectum for 1 minute. Normal is 100.5-102.5F. This is a two person job!

Please let me know what you find.
