I have a 5 year old Bernese mountain dog. This evening

Customer Question
I have a 5...

I have a 5 year old Bernese mountain dog. This evening around 7:30 he vomited a sock and then had a seizure that lasted about 30 seconds. He never had a seizure prior. He fell to the floor and began to gallop, foam at the mouth and lost control of his bowel and bladder. After the 30 seconds he recovered rather quickly. Was able to run, hear and drank water. Just now he vomited again but this time it was another sock and a pair of panties. On Thursday my daughters friend left the bedroom door open by accident and Bruno got into the dirty laundry bin.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is the Bernese mountain dog's name?

Bruno

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Bruno?

He had a formed bowel movement yesterday morning.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Bruno, please?

I don't see a connection between the ingestion and vomiting of foreign bodies and a generalized seizure (previously called gran mal). Could he have ingested a prescription or recreational drug in a addition to the clothes? There are two main concerns at this time. The first is intestinal obstruction by a foreign body which is evidenced by persistent vomiting and/or anorexia...either of which should prompt a vet visit to have Bruno's abdomen X-rayed or ultrasounded. The second is his seizure.

Mark your calendar for this event and for just what you witnessed. Bruno's vet will need all the information you can gather when deciding if Bruno should be prescribed an anticonvulsive drug. Most of us will accept one mild (lasting less than 5 minutes, no thrashing about, no loss of consciousness) event monthly before prescribing such a drug. Should Bruno suffer another event within 24 hours of this one clustering is diagnosed and that may presage status epilepticus - the state in which seizure activity doesn't abate unless I heavily sedate or anesthetize my patient. He would then need the attention of a vet at your earliest convenience.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the type of seizures I see:

Partial seizures (previously called petit mal): focal or asymmetric sensory or motor activity affecting any part of the body (e.g., facial twitching, chomping of the mouth); can be associated with autonomic signs (salivation, vomiting, defecation).

Simple partial seizures don’t alter consciousness. Complex partial seizures cause the same symptoms as simple partial seizures and also alter mentation (mental status) and/or cause behavioral abnormalities.

Generalized seizures (previously called grand mal) cause diffuse motor activity with loss of consciousness.

Seizures first arising between the ages of 1-5 years are usually considered idiopathic (unknown cause) epilepsy. Seizures arising after 6 years of age are often caused by brain tumor or, less commonly, adult onset epilepsy. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
