English Bulldlog pup 6 mo...
English Bulldlog pup 6 mo. 37 lbs. Mollie likes to chew on acorns. I try to get them from her, but I'm afraid she may have swallowed parts of them. will they cause an obstruction in her intestines or will the stomach acids take care of them and pass them through her elimination system.

Hello, I'm Dr. Deb and will do my best to help with this concern about your dog.

My dogs also like to chew and crunch on acorns and while I try to prevent this from happening, I'm not always too terribly successful:(

There is always the potential for an obstruction if enough of these nuts are ingested but it actually is a fairly rare occurrence; in fact, I've never seen it happen. Diarrhea may develop from irritation, though.

Acorns do contain substances which might be toxic to dogs but huge amounts typically need to be eaten before problems are seen.

I'd try to prevent her from ingesting a lot of acorns as you are currently doing but I wouldn't panic if she still manages to eat some of them.

I hope this helps, Deb
