Customer Question
Hi- I have a...

Hi- I have a 12 yo 27 lb Cocker Spaniel with congestive heart failure and glaucoma... his recently started having a dry hacking cough that is not productive nor related to activity

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Coughing can be worrying. The Expert will know what you should do. What is the dog's name and age?

Is it possible to give him 100mg benzonatate

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

His name is ***** ***** he is generally happy, reasonably active and healthy (except for his blindness & heart problems which haven't negatively impacted is life much)

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Toby?

I think he is either 12 or 13... I adopted him as a senior dog about 3 years ago... he was +10 then..

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. There's very little clinical experience or published data on animal use for that drug. Dosages of 0.5 - 1 mg/lb 2-3 times daily have been noted but overdoses can be very toxic and so I'd prefer that you didn't administer it. My primary concern is that Toby's congestive heart failure treatment needs to be readjusted. In general, when these dogs cough more than expected, increasing their diuretic should be considered first. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

His cough is dry and unproductive... I am concerned that he is irritating his trachea
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 10 months ago

Thank you. Dry and unproductive doesn't rule out pulmonary edema nor a greatly enlarged heart impinging upon the large airways. If his vet can rule out pulmonary edema, Toby can be prescribed a narcotic antitussive such as butorphanol or codeine which would be safer than the benzonatate. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
