Greetings, I’m Dr. Peck, a small animal veterinarian in general practice. Hopefully I might be of some help. One moment while I reply…

Disclaimer: This communication is for discussion purposes only. Without seeing an animal in person, a valid veterinary-client-patient relationship does not exist, and therefore I am unable to diagnose, prognose, or treat. Any comments made during discussion here are based on the information provided and are simply my thoughts regarding what I’d be considering were this type of case presented to me in person. The BEST recommendation for ANY veterinary-related concern is to seek veterinary assessment in person with your local veterinarian.

With this kind of presentation I have two main concerns before any others. #1 - has there been a rodenticide / rat bait ingestion that is causing clotting issues? This can be determined by questioning (e.g. the owner is aware it occurred or that the toxin was in the home somewhere) and by checking clotting times - a blood test that can be done in the clinic. #2 If clotting is normal, is this an HGE case? HGE stand for hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and is fairly common in dogs. It can occur spontaneously, with severe stress, secondary to infections or other concurrent diseases. It is treated symptomatically with IV fluids to correct dehydration, antibiotics to prevent bacterial infection via the severely weakened gut, pain medications, nausea relief, etc. Some can be treated as outpatients, others are critical and must be hospitalized.

If her gums are pale instead of a healthy pink color or if she is severely lethargic and/or continuing to have severe bloody vomiting and/or diarrhea, she should be seen on emergency.

If she seems a little tired but is otherwise doing ok, many of these cases are ok to wait until regular business hours on. Again, I cannot diagnose or prognose over the internet however. Use your best judgement here on how concerned you are and seek emergency evaluation if necessary - again they will be likely evaluated for the two things I mentioned above first and foremost.

Other causes for this exist but these two are far and away the most common that I see in general practice. If she is willing to eat, you may offer cooked chicken and rice to keep it bland until you can get her in. If she can't hold down food / water - she should be seen sooner rather than later.
