Customer Question
I need help with...

I need help with my 3 month old puppy. He has severe puss pockets all over his head, mouth is swollen, third time experiencing this. Thinking auto immune disease. Two get visits, two different vets, no solution.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the puppy's name?

Harley. I would love to send you a picture of how he looks. He still eats, pees, poops. Happy to hear me talk to him. He lost his site last time.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Harley?

He's a full blooded pit bull terrier that weighs only 11 lbs at 3 months. But he's eating everyday, still.

I would very much like to see a pic. You can upload photos by using the paperclip or add file icon in the toolbar above your message box (if you can see those icons on your particular device) or you can use an external app such as dropbox.com/

I can be more accurate for you if I can see what you're seeing. You appear to be describing canine juvenile cellulitis (juvenile pyoderma, puppy strangles) which hasn't been treated long or throughly enough although loss of sight isn't consistent with this disease.

A vet mentioned that the first time when we went, puppy strangled. He lost site when puss pockets filled behind his eyes. I'm sending photos

Oh my. He's either the worst case of puppy strangles I've ever seen or suffers from severe immunoincompetence. You're going to lose him if he suffers from congenital (present at birth) immune deficiency and so, pragmatically speaking, he has to respond to treatment for puppy strangles if he has any chance of survival. That would involve 3-4 weeks + 1 week past clincal resolution of a systemic antibotic plus an immunosuppressive dose of prednisone (1 mg per pound of body weight daily) until lesions resolve - approximately 1-4 weeks; then the same dose administered every other day for 2-3 weeks, and tapering completely over the next few weeks. Referral to a specialist veterinary dermatologist (www.acvd.org) should be considered. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

How can I start him on medsHow do I get meds
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Those are prescription drugs that only Harley's attending vet can prescribe. Regretfully, we're not allowed to prescribe through this venue. Please clarify - he was seen by two different vets but neither prescribed medication for Harley?

Nothing like you described. Hi bite drops, clin-drops, doxycycline oral drops and I'm giving him penicillin
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Ugh. His antibiotics are reasonable but Harley should be administered an immunosuppressive dose of prednisone...which in most cases of puppy strangles is all I need to prescribe; in other words, most puppies don't require antibiotic therapy at all. His case would be too severe, however, not to have him on antibiotics. Feel free to share our conversation with your vet(s).

I'm taking him to emergency care now, dermatologist had opening oct 31. I have been giving him penicillin. But I should ask for prednisone.

That's smart...and a good way to have a specialist see a patient sooner than as a scheduled appointment. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
